GTA V PC Settings Guide

Grand Theft Auto V remains easy to run in its base configuration and surprisingly hard to run at the top of its advanced graphics section. Extended distance scaling and extended shadow distance can cut the frame rate in half on their own while changing very little in normal play.

The built-in benchmark also flatters your setup: it does not reproduce the traffic and pedestrian density of downtown Los Santos, and it certainly does not reproduce a full Online lobby. Test where you actually play.

Settings that matter most

  • Extended distance scaling: The most expensive slider in the game. Keep it low unless you have headroom to spare.
  • MSAA: Very costly at high resolutions; use TAA or a higher resolution instead.
  • Grass quality: Only matters outside the city, where you have frames to spare anyway.

Scope and assumptions

Covers the current enhanced PC build. Los Santos traffic is the CPU reference; the built-in benchmark understates real load.

  • • 1080p: very high frame rates on almost any modern GPU.
  • • 1440p high refresh: CPU single-thread speed sets the ceiling.
  • • 4K: comfortably achievable on upper mid-range hardware.

Troubleshooting checks

  • • Advanced graphics options (extended distance scaling) cost far more than the base preset.
  • • Online sessions are heavier than story mode; test there before settling.

Your GPU is limiting FPS here

NVIDIA RTX 4060 is holding back your AMD Ryzen 5 7600 at 1440p in GTA V. A better GPU could get you closer to ~58 fps at these settings.
