Rust PC Settings Guide

Rust's performance depends less on your settings than on the server you join. A fresh wipe on a small map is easy; a month-old server with enormous built compounds asks the game to track and draw thousands of player-placed entities, and that load falls on the CPU and system memory.

16 GB of RAM is a floor rather than a comfortable target on full servers. If your frame rate collapses only near big bases, that is entity streaming and no graphics preset will change it.

Settings that matter most

  • Object quality: Controls draw distance for built structures — the single most effective setting near bases.
  • Shadow quality: Expensive in large compounds with many walls and floors.
  • Grass displacement: A small visual touch with a surprisingly real cost; turn it off.

Scope and assumptions

Covers populated wipe-day servers with large built bases, which are far heavier than a fresh map.

  • • 1080p: RAM capacity and CPU matter as much as the GPU.
  • • 1440p: 16 GB is a minimum and 32 GB helps on full servers.
  • • Large monuments: reduce object and shadow quality before resolution.

Troubleshooting checks

  • • Stutter near large bases is entity streaming, not GPU load.
  • • Lower the object quality slider first; it controls draw distance for built structures.
