Starfield PC Settings Guide
Starfield's engine spends its budget in places that are easy to miss. Space and small outposts are light; New Atlantis, with its crowd simulation and layered interiors, is heavy and CPU-bound. Any preset that has only been tested on a barren moon is essentially untested.
The other quirk is upscaling. The game's internal resolution scaling has a large impact on both performance and image quality, and setting it correctly is usually worth more than several individual quality sliders combined.
Settings that matter most
- Render resolution scale: The most powerful single control. Quality-level scaling costs little visually.
- Crowd density: Directly reduces the CPU load in cities, which is where the frame rate actually falls.
- Shadow quality: A meaningful GPU saving in built-up areas with many light sources.
Scope and assumptions
Covers the current Creation Engine 2 PC build with upscaling available. Major cities are the CPU reference; space is not representative.
- • 1080p: High with Quality upscaling on mainstream GPUs.
- • 1440p: reduce crowd and shadow quality before textures.
- • Cities: expect a CPU ceiling that more GPU power will not lift.
Troubleshooting checks
- • Benchmark in New Atlantis; anywhere else understates the load.
- • If lowering resolution changes nothing, the CPU is the bottleneck.
