Fortnite PC Settings Guide
Fortnite is effectively two different games from a hardware perspective. Performance mode uses a stripped-down renderer that hits very high frame rates on old hardware; the Unreal Engine 5 path with Lumen and Nanite is one of the most demanding configurations in any free-to-play title.
Pick one and commit. Mixing the two goals — UE5 lighting with competitive frame rates — produces a setup that neither looks good nor plays well, and building duels punish input latency more than they reward visual fidelity.
Settings that matter most
- Rendering mode: Performance for competitive play, DirectX 12 with Lumen for visuals. Not both.
- Nanite and Lumen: Off entirely if your goal is high refresh; they are the whole cost of the UE5 path.
- View distance: Keep at Epic even in Performance mode — seeing distant builds matters.
Scope and assumptions
Separates the Performance mode renderer from the Unreal Engine 5 Lumen/Nanite path, which have very different hardware requirements.
- • 1080p competitive: Performance mode delivers by far the highest frame rates.
- • 1440p visuals: the UE5 path with Quality upscaling on a modern mid-range GPU.
- • High refresh: Performance mode is the only reliable route on older hardware.
Troubleshooting checks
- • Do not mix the UE5 lighting path with competitive frame-rate goals.
- • Building and editing feel worse with high input latency than with low settings.
