Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an Unreal Engine 4 title with far more open-world content than its predecessor, and the PC version's cost is concentrated in vegetation, shadows and character rendering rather than raw resolution. Grasslands and the Gongaga region are where a preset actually gets tested; corridors and battle arenas are not representative.

The good news is that it scales gracefully. Dropping from the highest preset to High costs very little visually and buys a large amount of headroom, which is usually the right trade for a game you will play for eighty hours.

Settings that matter most

  • Shadow quality: The single largest cost in open regions; one step down is nearly invisible in motion.
  • Vegetation density: Directly drives the frame rate in the grasslands. Medium is a good balance.
  • Upscaling: Quality mode is close to free and preserves character detail in cutscenes.

Scope and assumptions

Covers the Unreal Engine 4 PC release. Open regions with heavy vegetation are used as the reference, not linear story sections.

  • • 1080p: High runs comfortably on current mid-range GPUs.
  • • 1440p: upscaling at Quality preserves detail with little visible cost.
  • • High refresh: CPU headroom matters in busy open-world areas.

Troubleshooting checks

  • • Cap the frame rate if you see uneven pacing in cutscenes.
  • • Shadow and foliage settings give the largest gains; textures give the least.
