Path of Exile 2 looks like a GPU game and behaves like a CPU game. Campaign zones run comfortably on almost anything modern, but endgame maps with a stacked mod pool put hundreds of simultaneous projectiles, auras and death effects on screen, and that load lands on the processor.

Tuning should therefore start with effect-heavy options rather than resolution. The build that clears a map in fifteen seconds is also the build most likely to expose a frame-time spike, so test your own character rather than a generic scene.

Settings that matter most

  • Effect quality: The highest-value setting to lower. It directly reduces the particle load that causes endgame spikes.
  • Shadows: Dynamic shadows from many light sources are expensive in packed maps.
  • Texture quality: Safe to keep high on 8 GB cards; it is not what causes the stutter.

Scope and assumptions

Covers the current PC build in DirectX 12. Dense endgame encounters with heavy particle effects are the reference, not the campaign.

  • • 1080p: most modern GPUs are sufficient; CPU single-thread speed matters more.
  • • 1440p: raise textures freely and keep effects quality moderate.
  • • High refresh: expect CPU-bound dips during large simultaneous effect spam.

Troubleshooting checks

  • • Lower bloom, shadows, and effect quality before resolution during endgame maps.
  • • Restarting the client after long sessions can clear accumulated memory pressure.
